  • Take a closer look at your daily diet and find out if the foods you are eating can give you all the essentials of minerals, vitamins and nutrients. You could also check with a nutritionist who will be able to advise you how to eat correctly to avoid starving your body or store excess fat. She may advise you on a fruit and vegetables diet plan or the need to take supplements.
  • When you are looking to change your diet, please also consider whole grains as opposed to processed carbohydrates. Do you know that white bread, white rice and breakfast cereals have a relatively high glycemic index that can help increase your blood sugar and insulin levels? Therefore change to a diet of brown rice and whole grain breakfast cereals. Carbohydrates on the other hand are a lot harder to digest and therefore increases your blood sugar and insulin thereby giving you cells making the insulin a hard time.
  • Start an exercise program. Any type will do so long as you start getting active because inactivity helps to you get type 2 diabetes, even brisk walking. This is because when you muscles get the physical motions and that makes their body work harder and therefore absorb glucose maintaining good blood glucose levels and using insulin as well. Ultimately your body cells making insulin don’t get too much stress do so.
  • Stop Smoking if you’re a smoker and don’t pick up this habit if you are not. Medical researches show that smokers are about 70% more likely to develop diabetes than non-smokers.

Change Your Lifestyle-Lifestyle Intervention or Risk of Diabetes?

People with diabetes have high blood sugar levels. For type 2, the body produces insufficient amount of insulin to digest the blood sugar. Therefore you can change your lifestyle to bring down this higher than normal blood glucose level – all by changing to good eating habits.

Many people usually suffer from prediabetes before they develop the full blown disease in the next few years. However many of these people have never tested or obtain any diagnosis of the disease. They have too high sugar content in their blood but not high enough to be diagnosed as having the disease. You should therefore change your lifestyle, start good diet and control to prevent it from happening.

Think of what inactivity your life revolves around and change it. Like being TV addicts and couch potatoes are all examples of inactivity which are candidates for type 2 diabetics so avoid them.

Taking preventions from diabetes are not as hard as people think. It is definitely easier than going to a clinic to seek treatment or taking medications instead. Many people have resorted to lifestyle changes and yet lead a very healthy life working towards a complete cure from diabetes.
